What responsibilities does a Home Health Aide have?

The responsibilities of a Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) will be contingent on the needs of each client. Some of my typical day to day duties included assistance with bathing, using the bathroom, and getting dressed for the day.

In addition to personal grooming, I also ran errands, did light housekeeping as well as washed and folded laundry. My favorite was meal preparation. It’s a great way to bond with your client, and usually, they are delighted to help you!

How will I know what to do for each client?

Taking care of many clients can seem confusing. Luckily, each client has a plan of care created by a New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN). Our CHHA classes online teach you to adhere to this plan of care. It is the responsibility of the RN to supervise and delegate responsibilities to the CHHA. It is the responsibility of the CHHA to follow the established plan of care.

How do I become certified in New Jersey?

In New Jersey, Home Health Aides fall under the supervision of the New Jersey Board of Nursing and are certified only after completing the required training program, a competency evaluation, and a criminal history background check.

What is the job outlook for Certified Home Health Aides (CHHAs)?

This profession is in high demand! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of home health aides is projected to grow 38 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.”

As the baby-boom population ages and the elderly population increases, demand for the services of home health aides to provide assistance will continue to increase." This means an abundance of job opportunities! I was able to find a job shortly after becoming certified.

What is the CHHA compensation like?

The hourly rate for a CHHA in New Jersey fluctuates ranging from an average of $10 an hour to approximately $15 an hour.

How does CHHA online training work?

Instead of spending 60 hours for 2-3 weeks sitting in a classroom you will have access to an interactive video-based training that you can complete in the comfort of your own home with no distractions; with the ability to go at your own pace within the scheduled guidelines.

With our CHHA classes online, you can even show up to class in your pajamas! Having completed the interactive online classes, you will then come to our training center on the scheduled dates for the session where you will partake in our 2-day clinical training (16 hours.)

Classes will be led by instructors approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. And finally, you will complete and pass the proctored exam before applying to the New Jersey Board of Nursing for certification.

Why would I want to do my CHHA training online?

Online training was a key role in my success in this program. As a busy person, CHHA online classes were my saving grace. I could virtually work anywhere and didn’t have to waste gas or time getting to an actual facility. Let's make the classes work around your life!

Do online classes suit everyone?

Online classes are not for everyone. They require a computer with internet access, which some people do not have. If you do not own a computer, you could always go to the local library and use their computers or maybe borrow one.

Computer stations are also set up in the skills training lab that can be used between the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Please schedule dates and times ahead of time. If you have a computer or other device but no internet access, then you could always find a place (such as Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts) that offers free internet service.

Secondly, you have to be self-motivated. Your instructor will be giving you support via email or phone and will be available to answer any questions you have, but if you are the type of person that needs the classroom environment to learn, maybe this training is not for you (although we really hope it is!)

And of course, you need to know how to use a computer. You do not need to be a computer genius, but you do need basic computer knowledge to access the online modules.

How long does it take to complete the CHHA online program?

This program will be completed within an eight-week timeframe. Following orientation, you will have eight weeks to complete your CHHA online modules – that’s only 12 hours a week on your own schedule. The two-day skills training will be completed in person at our skills lab on the schedule dates (16 hours.) After the skills training is completed, each student will have made an appointment during the scheduled test dates to complete the 1-hour proctored computer exam.
